Hi, I’m Joshua Levy, MD
Welcome to my practice, CAP MD Therapy!
As an integrative family medicine physician specializing in Child Adolescent Psychiatry (CAP), I bring a unique lens to the table.
While I am board-certified in family medicine, not psychiatry, this distinction allows me to emphasize and focus on total health.
This foundation in family medicine has granted me the privilege to see the bigger picture, beyond traditional psychiatric labels, and to recognize how interconnected our physical, emotional, and mental well-being truly are.

Dr. Levy has been an incredible support for our son, who was recently diagnosed with ADHD. He took the time to really understand what was going on, and his calm, respectful approach made my son feel heard from day one. We’ve seen real progress and feel lucky to have found him!

M.L.
parent of a 12-year-old

I’ve never really liked going to doctors, especially to talk about mental health, but Dr. Levy made it feel normal. He’s easy to talk to and never makes you feel judged. Therapy actually helps now.

KJ
19-year-old

Dr. Levy is compassionate and really knows how to connect with teens. Our son felt comfortable opening up to him and started improving at school within a month! We were skeptical at first because he didn’t take insurance, but it was absolutely worth it. He was always available when we needed him, and he personally handled any medication issues within a day. We’ve never had that level of care from any other provider. We highly recommend him!

D.R. and W.R.
parents of a 14-year-old

Previous doctors kept pushing medications, and we were really hesitant to try again. But Dr. Levy helped us understand how and why they can be helpful. For the first time, it actually made sense and we were able to make a confident, informed decision.

L.M.
parent of a 13-year-old

What really stood out to me was Dr. Levy’s medical background. He didn’t just talk about emotions or symptoms, he looked at my full picture. He knew which labs to get, explained everything in a way that made sense to me, and helped me figure out how to tweak my vitamins, exercise, and daily habits. It felt like the first time someone actually connected the dots for me.

What ages do you treat?
We see adolescents (typically starting around age 12 or 13) and adults of all ages. If you're unsure whether we're a good fit for a specific age or situation, feel free to reach out - we’re happy to clarify.
Do you offer therapy, medication, or both?
Dr. Levy offers both therapy and medication management. Some patients come to Dr. Levy for therapy only, some for medication, and many benefit from an integrated approach. Dr. Levy will help figure out what’s best for your unique situation.
What conditions do you treat?
We specialize in treating ADHD, anxiety disorders, and depression. We also treat bipolar disorder, PTSD, and OCD, among others. We can help with school or work stress, life transitions, and relationship issues. If you're not sure whether we treat what you're dealing with, just ask - we're here to help.
What should I expect at the first appointment?
The first appointment is a comprehensive evaluation. We’ll go over your history, current concerns, and any past treatment. From there, we’ll work with you to create a personalized plan. For adolescents, we typically involve parents or guardians in part of the session.
How long are appointments?
Initial evaluations are usually 60–75 minutes. Follow-up sessions can range from 25–50 minutes depending on whether we’re doing therapy, medication management, or both.
How often will I need to be seen?
It depends on your needs. Some patients are seen weekly or biweekly for therapy, while others are seen monthly or quarterly for medication management. We’ll adjust the schedule as your situation evolves.
Do you take insurance?
We do not bill insurance directly. However, we provide superbills that you can submit for potential reimbursement. Many patients are able to get partial reimbursement depending on their plan.
Do you offer virtual appointments?
Yes, we offer both in-person and secure telehealth appointments. You can choose what’s most convenient for you. In person we are located in Marin, Palo Alto, and Sacramento.
What if I need to cancel or reschedule?
We have a strict 48-hour cancellation policy to respect both your time and ours. Late cancellations or missed appointments may be subject to the full-appointment fee. Please let us know as soon as possible if something comes up.
Can you prescribe controlled substances (like stimulants or benzodiazepines)?
Yes, if clinically appropriate. Prescribing is done with careful evaluation and ongoing monitoring. We follow all state and federal guidelines and may request lab work or collateral information when needed.
Do you do genetic testing or lab work?
Yes, we sometimes recommend lab work or pharmacogenetic testing to help guide treatment - especially if someone has had trouble finding the right medication in the past.
How involved are parents or guardians in teen treatment?
For adolescents, we typically involve parents during intake and periodically throughout treatment, depending on the patient’s age and the issues at hand. We balance privacy with collaboration to make sure teens feel safe and supported.
Do you write school letters or help with accommodations?
Yes, if we’ve done an appropriate evaluation and believe accommodations are clinically justified, we can support school letters, 504 plans, or IEP processes.
